PG College of Nursing celebrated Breastfeeding Week

P.G. College of Nursing celebrated World Breastfeeding Week from 1st to 7th August 2026 with a series of educational and skill-based activities aimed at promoting awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and strengthening breastfeeding support among healthcare professionals and students.

The celebrations commenced with the inauguration ceremony on 1st August 2026. The programme began with a melodious welcome song, followed by a warm welcome to the dignitaries and participants. Dr. Daisy Abraham, Vice Principal, P.G. College of Nursing, unveiled the theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2026, marking the formal beginning of the celebrations.

The gathering was addressed by Dr. Roja Princy, Principal, and Dr. G. Hemavati, Vice Principal, who highlighted the importance of breastfeeding and the vital role of healthcare professionals in supporting and promoting optimal breastfeeding practices.

Adding colour and awareness to the programme, the students of B.Sc. Nursing 5th Semester presented an informative skit on breastfeeding, effectively conveying important messages related to breastfeeding practices and maternal and infant health. The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries, resource persons, faculty members, students and participants for their valuable contributions.

As part of the week-long celebration, educational sessions were conducted covering important aspects of breastfeeding. The sessions included Anatomy and Physiology of the Breast, followed by Advantages of Breastfeeding and Common Breastfeeding Problems and their Management. The sessions were delivered by Dr. Anu S. Thomas, HOD, Department of Child Health Nursing; Mrs. Neha Singh, Assistant Professor; and Mrs. Sushmita, Assistant Professor, providing students and participants with valuable theoretical knowledge and practical insights.

On 5th August 2026, a hands-on skill training session was conducted by Dr. Omesh Khurana, an eminent paediatrician. The session provided participants with an opportunity to strengthen their practical skills and confidence in supporting mothers with breastfeeding-related care.

The successful conduct of the week-long programme was made possible through the dedicated support and coordination of the Child Health Nursing Dept team of Faculty—Mrs. Kesarlata, Mrs. Bhagvati Sahu, Mrs. Reshma, Mrs. Rupeshwari, and Ms. Lisha. Their active involvement in coordinating the activities, supporting the students, and facilitating the various sessions contributed significantly to the smooth and successful execution of the programme.

The week-long celebration served as an enriching platform for learning, skill development, and advocacy for breastfeeding, reinforcing the commitment of the institution towards promoting maternal and child health and ensuring evidence-based breastfeeding support.
